The term continuous improvement can be very confusing if it is not placed in a specific context. Put simply, it is an ongoing drive for perfection in everything you do. In the quality improvement literature, continuous improvement is also known as Kaizen.
Kaizen originated within Japanese organisations shortly after the end of the Second World War. It quickly became the ‘mantra’ for Japanese manufacturing companies and became one of the foundations of Toyota’s rise from a small carmaker to the largest automotive manufacturer in the world.
